THE ORDINANCE (LAW) OF INHERITABILITY OF WOMEN As the daughters of Zelophehad were granted the right to inherit their father's share (Num. 27), the elders from the tribe of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh approached Moses with a complaint. If the daughters of Zelophehad were married to men from other tribes, then their inheritance would be taken away. Moses answered asserting two principles. 1) The right of girls to choose their husbands, marriage being a matter of choice. 2) Their freedom of choice was restricted to men of their own tribe for the safe keeping of the tribe inheritance. Finally the chapter was concluded with the following sentence. "These are the Commandments and the ordinances which the Lord commanded by Moses to the people Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.
